Fourteen people were killed when gunmen opened fire ‘randomly’ in a bar in Soweto, Johannesburg, police said today.
At least ten others have been injured, three of whom are fighting for their lives in a hospital.
The attackers reportedly fled the scene in a white Toyota Quantum minibus, and no arrests have been made.
According to Gauteng Police Commissioner Elias Mawela, the incident happened around 12:30 a.m. this morning.
The shooting comes exactly two weeks after the tragic deaths of 22 people at an East London tavern.
‘Primary investigations indicate that the people were having a good time in the tavern.’
‘They just came in and shot at them randomly,’ Mawela explained.
‘All of a sudden, they heard some gunshots, and that’s when people tried to flee the tavern,’ Mawela added.
‘At the moment, we don’t have all the details about the motive and why they were targeting these people.’
‘You can see that a high calibre firearm was used, and it was shooting randomly.’
‘You can see that every single one of those people was struggling to get out of the tavern.
‘The number of cartridges discovered on the scene indicated that a group of people shot at the patrons.’
Footage posted online depicts the horrifying scene of revellers’ bodies laying on the floor, while others stand in shock.
Last night, four people were killed in another bar shooting in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Eight more people were taken to the hospital.
Around 8.30 p.m., two armed men in a VW Polo stormed into a Pietermaritzburg tavern before opening fire.
